Pictures of Bodie, California

This is a panoramic view showing most of the remaining buildings.

Note the Standard Mill in the distant center.

This corrugated tin mill replaced the original wood
frame mill that burned in 1899.

This is another view of
remaining buildings.
Still more buildings.
Old freight wagons.
The Methodist Church, the only Protestant church,
was erected in 1882.

The last service was held here in 1932.
The Swazey Hotel.

Interior view of a house.

I like outhouses! They are part of Americana, and as I tell my kids, everyone should experience an outhouse on a cold night in January, and on a hot afternoon in August.

Note the fitting on the roof. All the outhouses in Bodie had an air vent running from the hole up through the roof. That's hi-tech!

Bodie has two "functioning" public outhouses.

This one has a lo-tech problem!

A view of the cemetery as seen from the
top of an adjacent hilltop.
A grave in the cemetery Note the old (split)
wooden grave marker.

Rosa May was a 24 year prostitute during Bodie's heyday. When she died 25 years later she was buried outside of the cemetery fence. Only "respectable" people were buried inside the fence.

The red lantern that hung outside of Rosa May's house is on display in the museum.
