*The USS Cairo had two steam engines, each with a 22 inch bore and a 6 foot stroke (that's a 27,360 cubic inch displacement, or about 448,348 cc's). They produced about 600 horsepower each.
The hull was of white oak, as much as 25 inches thick, covered with 2 1/2" iron plates.
